When it comes to May celebrations most people would say that their Cinco de Mayo plans are as elaborate as their Memorial Day or graduation plans. Much the same way that St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t have anything directly to do with the United States, we’ve sort of adopted the celebration, for better or worse. I’m guilty of it too.
Oh, it’s Cinco de Mayo? Yeah, throw me a beer and line up a tequila shot or two.
Admittedly, this is not what I’m sure the forefathers of Mexico were hoping for, but it is what it is and we all should make the most of it. Considering that it’s this weekend you had better start planning your day if you’re looking to make it an affair to remember.
If you’re going to be in Southern California for the festivities (as SoCal is probably has the most legitimate reason for celebrating a holiday that isn’t ours) then you’ve got a lot of choice on your plate.
In San Diego you’re going to find rad times at the following places:
1. Saturday, May 4th
“Local Habit is flying in 500lbs of Louisiana crawfish for their Crawfish Boil Part Deux. At 11a, they’re tapping a cask of El Segundo Blue House IPA, and the Euphoria Brass Band is bringing you some real New Orleans jazz starting at 830p.”
2. “Puesto is giving away one grass-fed beef Picadillo Gringo Taco per person today and tomorrow!”
3. Sunday, May 5th
“Bailiwick is transforming into a cantina for Cinco with $5 Palomas, (tequila, lime, and grapefruit juice), a Mexican-style brunch, and Mexican Western movies.“

If you happen to be in the San Francisco Bay area this weekend then it’s looking like SOMA StrEAT Food Park is a good bet for a killer time. Mexican Beer Pong and piñata swatting will be going down there, and best of all, it’s FREE! All you need to do is RSVP here! If that doesn’t quite sound like your ideal Cinco de Mayo then by all means click here for a list of other killer spots in the Bay.
As for the greater Los Angeles area, I can speak from experience, that it won’t take much to track down a good time. If you’re looking for some of the best Mexican food around downtown I’d recommend El Coyote, which is a spot to frequently see celebrities. Who knows, you might be so smashed you’ll actually have the gall to ask for a picture with them while you wear a sombrero that’s four sizes too large. In any case, you can’t go wrong in LA. Keep your ear to the ground and follow the reverberations of the bass. Parties always mean bass.
Enjoy and be safe!
